Values based on the Network Carbon Footprint of the LCL system, TÜV-certified according to DIN EN ISO 14064:2006

CO2 shipment table

As planned, the LCL system VTL Vernetzte-Transport-Logistik GmbH has produced its shipment tables in two versions. The basis for both is the values identified for the VTL Network Carbon Footprint (NCF), which has been TÜV certified in May 2011. VTL was the first LCL system to present its NCF, at this year’s transport logistic in Munich. The NCF was drawn up in co-operation with the Institute for Sustainability in Transport and Logistics (INVL) at Heilbronn University. The subsequent shipment tables were also developed at the INVL, by Prof. Dr. Dirk Lohre and Ruben Gotthardt.

The standard shipment table comprises average values for the CargoFamily, broken down according to distance and weight, thus enabling the identification of CO2 emissions.

In addition to the standard shipment table, a table has also been created that can be customised. Each VTL partner or shipping depot can enter its specific values in the table in order to calculate and read their own CO2 emissions.

The average values collected from the VTL system reflect honest and practice-oriented values. Because VTL has gone far beyond pure transport performance in collacting the data: transhipment and administration were also taken into account, along with the upstream chain, for example fuel production, electricity production and CO2 equivalents. Business trips and employee commutes were also considered.

The so-called Scope 3 system limit was thereby recorded considerably more comprehensively than foreseen in the EU CO2 standard planned for the transport sector in 2012.
